CADW (Welsh Government): Grant "listed building" status to Ely Library in Cardiff
Ely Library in Grand Ave, Cardiff, is a 1986 building of architectural importance designed by staff and students of the Welsh School of Architecture. Its “garden village style” chimed well with Grand Ave. It was described in Punch as a “little gem” and a “handsome new building with a quirky formal strength”. It won praise in technical journals and is recorded in the prestigious Pevsner Architectural Guide. Follow us on FACEBOOK It was socially innovative in 1986 being purposely commissioned in a deprived area of the city with a public meeting space, a venue for exhibitions and early computers ‘viewdata’ terminals - by an enlightened council who were keen to invest for the people of Ely. It is also a regular meeting place for elderly residents in the area and loved by them and the many children who spent happy childhood hours there.
